Could CamVac really be the perfect extractor for the average workshop?
CamVac: a closer look at the extractor that punches above its weight

This series was created to give you the most honest and useful guide to dust extraction we could - valuable whether or not you ever buy from us. The more we researched the subject, the more we recognised that our industry - ourselves included - has relied too heavily on received wisdom and that the science of personal health protection deserves more active attention than it has historically received.
In this final email we want to show you how we try to put that thinking into practice - and why an independent reviewer, without any input from us, described CamVac as "the perfect extractor for the average workshop".

CamVac is a High Pressure, Low Volume extractor made in Sheffield. Its standard filter configuration delivers high capture efficiency in the PM2.5 range - the particle size band identified by international health agencies as posing the greatest long-term risk - without the costly upgrade required on most chip collector systems. The cyclonic inlet reduces clogging and extends filter life. A multi-motor modular design means the range can deliver a suitable solution for a single benchtop machine to a mixed multi-tool workshop whilst retaining all the benefits of the CamVac system and design.

It is also quieter than most alternatives. A clever exhaust diffusion system reduces perceived noise by up to 50% - a meaningful difference in a workshop where extraction runs for hours.

The honest assessment: CamVac is not the right tool for every workshop. If you regularly run a wide planer-thicknesser through heavy hardwood stock and generate very high chip volumes, a dedicated HVLP chip collector still has the edge for that specific task. But for the majority of mixed workshops - varied machines, benchtop tools, sanders, routers, turning - CamVac makes a strong case as a single primary system that provides genuine PM2.5 protection without costly filter upgrades. |
The article covers each of CamVac's key design features in depth - cyclonic separation, motor modularity, noise reduction, hose compatibility, and total cost of ownership - and explains the thinking behind them.
